But keep in mind the new glove has an updated water resistant top fabric.

I like the gloves a lot. First, the design is attractive and my hands were warm when I used them for an early morning walk. Later in the day when I was cycling, the fingers were nimble as I easily shifted gears on my road bicycle on the famed Red Rock Loop outside Las Vegas.

None of Handske's gloves use velcro and the wrist cuff makes a tight seal to not allow any cold air to creep in.

It's a tight fit, but only at the beginning. And the beauty is that they can be re-charged whenever they are running low on juice. These lights are wonderful because you don't need a power outlet do use these lights.

I use my BioLites in my bathroom and bedroom.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhWY4CoMSjXkSg1FdjPopRHoCbAlC0kBZqoaeLtQLNlji5iqu5VKipQAm2iqSgS7fjY2W4RGdudk2qG_vOT1zUaqGmz0EhMhWNEYgWqeovJqakllKU_VJWxK_DTOYBMrq9F1fO1YChP-wEZRDWjiPDU7c2ggOVjWWHca_w3Fqh0T516X9fGLwmT2Nv6=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; They're also ideal for high-humid places like Florida and the other Gulf states.

These gloves have no Velcro straps.

Just slip them on and off as a single piece of clothing for your hands. There are small tabs on the middle and ring finger sleeves to help you remove the gloves.

There's also a terry cloth swipe wipe under the thumb that runs to the wrist.

There's no bulky padding that can sometimes shift in the glove material. Keeping it simple, the top panel is a lycra material and the palm grip is silicone. The palm veneer does a nice job gripping your handlebar.

I asked Handske owner Sam Gallegos why he started the brand. He launched the brand on Kickstarter in 2017 and official got the Handske gloves in front of the media at the Sea Otter festival in April 2018.

"I started the brand for two reasons. In my 20 plus years of cycling journeys, I never found a glove that just fit right. Usually too baggy. And because most were boring colors. Out of that Handske was born to offer a well-fitting glove with attention to detail for certain necessary features and to connect the creativity of artists with the sport," Gallegos told me. "With out our collaborative effeort since our inception, we have worked with over 10 artists from all walks of life."

Handske is based in El Paso, Texas and these short-finger gloves retail for $25.99.

Take a look at these gloves I wore this morning. This is the "Descend" model.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj78I87eZW2AlDxtlNJS6ErB7lVs7AFg6TkIpCzVCJB1VOezDeCS0WYX5307sGBw0FQXLWOZBPA_iMH4BodBhQ-iFwikJd9rJpN8ehWudz04tO1eqy5n6CfuErRfmxcxw1q17Ryj4bNeXs/s2048/IMG_1384.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em;
It's 113 degrees back in Las Vegas, so here I am climbing the eight percent grade of the Great Basin National park scenic drive.

It was closed earlier in the week for road repairs.

But today, it's back open and I'm working my way up the mountain for a closer peek at Wheeler Peak.

In my bicycle book, Great Basin is the most under-rated and most unheralded national park in the national park portfolio.

It has both Nevada's highest peak at Wheeler soaring more than 13,000 feet tall, while below there are the famed caves that are closed because of the pandemic.

Great Basin can be a little under-rated because it's so isolated, a good five hours north of Las Vegas off US 50 near the Utah border. There's a cluster of homes and a motel, restaurant and post office a few miles from the national park entrance in a community called Baker and that's about it.

But I love Great Basin's raw natural feel, grand vistas and out-of-the-way serene setting.

And of course, it decided to rain as I bicycled up the scenic drive. Not a hard-driving rain, just raindrops and a light pour as I pedaled up the steep grade.

Great Basin is Nevada's only national park. The state has plenty of terrific state parks like Valley of Fire. And to reach Great Basin from Las Vegas, you drive north on US 93 through the spine of Lincoln County, which has a nice collection of state parks at your disposal.

Red Rock outside Las Vegas is managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, not the National Parks, while Mount Charleston is run by the US Forestry Service.

I strongly recommend Great Basin as a great get-away.

This morning on Father's Day the entrance to the Red Rock Scenic Drive was open at 6 a.m. -- not the 8 a.m. start time when the Bureau of Land Management reopened the scenic drive to motorized traffic a few weeks ago.

It was 6:10 a.m. when I was bicycling by the Red Rock entrance off State Route 159. I peered toward the red rock ridge, which has a notch in the middle. I love that notch, which allows beams of lights to shoot through the ridge at daybreak.

Funny, Red Rock has nothing to do with a summer job I worked to afford college. But whenever I see that "notch" in the ridge, I think of the "notch" in the garment patterns I worked on at the Liz Claiborne plant, where I worked with my dad.

I worked with my father for 3 1/2 summers though high school and college, driving the hour back and forth with him from suburban New York to north New Jersey. The Claiborne production plant was not too far from the Giants football stadium in the Joisey swamps.

My dad was a worker bee. Man, he worked in the garment business for many years working long hours every day. I witnessed it.

Julius Cznel survived the Holocaust as a little kid fleeing with his family to Siberia, lived in displaced person camps following World War II and came to the USA at age 14 when he began learning the garment business in school. His last name was changed to Snel when he arrived in the United States.
When Liz Claiborne created her brand and line of women's clothing, Julius Snel was the second person hired in the production house.
He raised three kids outside New York City. And my dad and I bonded well at minor league ballgames in Florida.

This morning, I bicycled to downtown before heading over to Raiders stadium and then back home in Summerlin.

I thought I would photograph the Fremont Street and 9th Avenue intersection at each corner because the artwork is so impressive.

Take a look.

The corner reminded me of my days of covering downtown Las Vegas for the Review-Journal from 2012-16.

Retail bicycle stores are busy with bike repairs these days and that was true over at
Bike World, one of the older bike shops in the Las Vegas.

I chatted with Frank, a friendly Bike World worker who bought my new book Bicycle Man for $10 and said he would leave it on the counter to see if people would be interested in reading or buying it.

Bike World at 1901 S. Rainbow Blvd is a throwback bicycle store and Frank told a customer that it would take two weeks before a repair could be made.

More people are bicycling and taking old bikes out of their garages to ride only to see the bikes could use a repair. That's why so many bike shops are busy doing repairs.

Selling books is no easy task. Thank you Summerlin Giant Store for taking a few books to sell and I'm hoping Jared at Las Vegas Cyclery agrees to sell the books at his shop.

When I bicycled back and forth on Alta Drive from Summerlin to downtown Las Vegas and back all the time, I always stopped at a house that had roses along a low brick wall lining its front lawn.

I remember chatting with a gentleman by the name of Harry, who happened to be a bicyclist, too, of all things.

Well, just yesterday morning, I bicycled down the big hill of Alta to downtown and stopped to chat with this lady at the house.

I told her I was a bicyclist who long admired the roses lining their front lawn.

And I asked about Harry.

Well, this is Marianne, and she informed me that Harry died a few months ago.

It was sad to hear, but I did tell Marianne that I always enjoyed seeing their blooming rose bushes along Alta Drive, just west of the Rainbow intersection.

Marianne told me she was a retired mathematics teacher who know volunteered at the Assistance League of Las Vegas.

I told her I knew her husband from stopping to chat with him during my Alta Drive bicycle excursions.

It's the beauty of the bicycle -- fantastic human-powered, engine-free transportation with the chance to connect to people on the street.

It's also why I can't bike in groups. I stop to chat with people when I pedal all the time.

And these bicycle adventures are all in my new book, Bicycle Man: Life of Journeys.

I have my new favorite bicycling sunglasses.

To handle the bright sun of Las Vegas and the Western United States, I'm wearing Tifosi's new Sledge model, Crystal Orange with Clarion Blue lens.

The photo above is the sunglasses modeling itself along the famed Red Rock scenic drive outside Las Vegas.

Tifosi's bread-and-butter is its high quality sunglasses that sell for less than triple figures. In this case, the Sledge models are priced in the $69.96-$79.95 range.

I love the orange frame, which feels light but durable on my face. And the large lens surface blocks all harsh sun glare. As you can see, the frame is sturdy enough that it supports my rear view mirror quite nicely.

There are three other Sledge models -- Crystal red with a Clarion Yellow lens, Matte Black with a Smole lens and Matte White with a Smoke lens.

Each option includes two additional shield lenses: a clear lens and Tifosi’s high-contrast AC Red lens. With Sledge, cyclists are equipped with the ideal tint for any lighting condition.

Bicycle Stories recommends the Sledge sunglasses by Tifosi.

I wear Tifosi sunglasses when I ride my bicycle and take walks and hikes because the company's eyewear is outstanding quality at an affordable price.

In fact, let me show you the collection of Tifosi sunglasses I wear for my outdoor activities.

The Tifosi sunglasses have a variety of styles and one will fit your taste.

They're not as expensive as the super high-end sunglasses, which is why Tifosi is a great deal for the buck.

Bicycle Stories recommends Tifosi and look for its newest sunglasses in May.
I got to know Dave and Athlos at Interbike, the bicycle industry's trade show in Las Vegas. You may recall he created a gorgeous bike jersey featuring LVSportsBiz.com and my former dog, Pugsy.

Now, Dave is leveraging the company's resources to help with the supply of masks and to help maintain incomes of Athlos' employees. Check them out:
Try a 3BARToday was a stunning day in the metro Las Vegas area and it was also a great day for a solitary bicycle ride in Red Rock Canyon outside Las Vegas.

I reached for my road bicycle, my helmet and gloves and two 3BAR energy bars that came in Cocoa Crunch and Tropical-Tri flavors.

The 3BARs are the work of Erin DeMarines from Tampa. There are a lot of energy bars to choose from and I'd recommend Erin's 3BARS, which are vegan, soy free, gluten free, wheat free, plant-based and made from organic ingredients.

They fit conveniently in my bike jersey pockets and they're perfect for all type of outdoor activities and indoor workouts.

Take a look. I'm pretty sure Erin's energy bars have never posed in Red Rock Canyon amid such pretty landscape.

As the story goes, Erin used to make her grandmother's cookies for her personal trainer clients until one one day they asked her to make them even healthier. So voila, after many trials, she turned them into the 3BAR.

You can check the 3BAR website here.

I found them tasty without that sweet aftertaste. It's a nice energy boost without that hunger crash afterwards.

Here are retail prices. Erin says the 3BAR is in 50 stores in the Tampa Bay market. And she has been dropping them off at people's houses for "no contact" delivery during these trying coronavirus times.

Bicycle Stories recommends the 3BAR. Get out there and fire up those endorphins. But do it in a solitary fashion or at least maintain a six-foot buffer for physical distancing to stem the spread of COVID-19. And when you do go out there, bring the 3BARS.
You're bicycling and in that pedaling zen groove, but then you have that nagging signal that the bicycle is just not moving ahead like it should. There's that sinking feeling that one of your tire tubes is leaking air. You stop and inspect the tire and it's growing flat miles from home.

But then you accept it and know things will be OK.

You have a Pro Bike Tool Mini Bike Pump snuggled next to your water bottle cage, or maybe in a jersey rear pocket because it's that small and convenient to carry.

It's a handy tool that can pump your tire tube to a sturdy 90 PSI and get you back pedaling on the road or trail.

I'm old school, so I don't do the cartridges and instead choose to have the small pump secured to my bicycle frame.

It works easily. A small pump hose attachment comes out of the cylinder and all you do is screw one end of the hose to the pump. One hose end can accommodate a Presta valve, while the other end can handle a Schrader valve. So, just use the end you need for your tire tube and use the other end to screw into the pump.

As you can see, it can be carried on your bike with a small attachment that gets connected to the frame via the bolt that locks your water bottle cage onto your bike.

Bicycle Stories recommends the Mini Bike Pump as a smart tool that can easily come along your ride -- and keep your ride going if you deal with a flat.

Steve and Laura Toll have come out with a new bicycle saddle brand called Adamo Island.

I have used the Tolls' previous saddles under the well-known ISM brand name. But as I pedaled on the famed Red Rock Scenic Drive outside Las Vegas in early November, I enjoyed the ride thanks to the comfy Adamo Island bike seat. The saddle was unveiled at Eurobike in early September, Steve Toll told Bicycle Stories.

The Tolls originally intended the Adamo Island bike seat to be used by people using eBikes and casual bicycle riders.

"But test riders loved it and suggested it could be for all types of riding," Steve Toll told me.

The Tolls are known for creating the ISM bike saddles, a more narrow saddle used by many tri-athletes, competitive racers and hard-core roadies.

I asked Steve Toll to compare the established ISM saddle with the newer Adamo Island seat brand.

Toll responded, "Think Cadillac and Chevy or Lexus and Toyota or Lincoln and Ford.

The Adamo Island bike saddle is wider and has more cushion built into the seat.

I found it very comfortable and it made the bike ride even more enjoyable.

Bicycle Stories highly recommends the Adamo Island bike saddle. The intro price is $99.88 and it's available at www.Adamoislandsaddles.com

It took a while to figure out a 100-mile bicycle route in the Las Vegas area.

But now I have it down -- it's a Summerlin to Hoover Dam/Arizona and back ride, following the same route home that I follow to this engineering marvel at the Nevada-Arizona border.

It's a bike ride fashioned to eliminate as many surface roads as possible and use as many paved bike trails as possible.

The truth is I witness how people operate motorized vehicles on our roads in the metro Las Vegas area and I fear the speeding, distracted driving and the incompetence to operate a car inperil my bicyclist safety. Plus, there's the general discomfort of having so many motorists nearly drive their cars into me, which has forced me to seek refuge on trails without the threat of motorists.

People who drive their cars and imperil my life will not keep me from bicycling, which comes as natural to me as breathing.

So I have pieced together a route that follows no less than four different paved trails -- the 215 Western beltway that I pick up at the 215 and Sahara for a ride to the trail end to Tropicana; then I'm back on the 215 trail way down at Warm Springs, and that trail becomes the Pacific Union railroad trail in Henderson, which hooks into the River Mountains Loop trail thanks to a bridge that spans 93 and ties the railroad trail into the River Mountains trail.

And I follow the River Mountains Loop toward the Lake Mead National Rec Area and onto Hoover Dam.

About half of the bicycle route is via trail.

A trail, however, doesn't guarantee your safety. The 215 trail through Henderson south of McCarren Airport has several dangerous crossings because of the design and engineering of the roads that are intersecting the trail at the 215 entrance and exit ramps.

The trailing crossings are dangerous. And crossing St. Rose Parkway is a joke via the 215 trail. There is no crossing. You are forced to bike a half-mile up the road to a traffic signal, cross St. Rose Parkway, and bike on a sidewalk against the flow of traffic with many motorists entering St. Rose from side parking lots and endangering you as you're on a sidewalk trying to reach the continuation of the 215 trail.

Heading home to Summerlin, the 215 trail heading north ends at Warm Springs and I follow Warm Springs across Las Vegas Boulevard and take it west to Valley View, where I turn right and pedal about three miles to Hacienda, where I turn left and head west.

Avoid Las Vegas Boulevard. If you don't take the lane on Las Vegas Boulevard, motorists will stay in their lane and come close to side-swiping you. I took the lane several times on previous rides on Las Vegas Boulevard and found that motorists drive their vehicles very close to me from behind, then darting around me.

But Valley View, which runs parallel to Las Vegas Boulevard is a wide road and quiet on a Saturday.

Plus I enjoyed this Cirque ad vehicle.
I follow Hacienda west to Durango, make a right turn and head north on Durango to Tropicana, where I turn left and bike a mile to the 215 western beltway trail just past the Tropicana entrance on 215. And I head home on the 215 trail in Summerlin.

Summerlin has homeless issues, too. Here's a makeshift tent on the 215 trail bridge spanning Town Center, a road in Summerlin.

It was hard to find a 100-mile ride I could enjoy from my home in Summerlin without driving somewhere else. Biking through Red Rock Canyon and turning right on Nevada State Route 160 to Potosi Mountain is a terrific bike ride but it's a hard climb and wouldn't result in a 100-mile ride with an out-and-back ride.

The Las Vegas area has some terrific rides -- the Red Rock Loop, Mount Charleston's Deer Creek Road and Valley of Fire. The city of Henderson is easily the best government at supporting bicycling with bike trails, while Clark County's government is a joke. City of Las Vegas is a mixed bag -- some OK safe roads to bike like Alta, but lots of other roads that are dangerous.

The Strip seems to have its own planning rules. Clark County should make the Strip safer and more accessible for bicyclists because it's a worker hub. But the county lets the hotel-casino owners call the shots -- ones that are not friendly to bicyclists.

I reached Hoover Dam around 10:30 a.m. and soaked up this feat of engineering. It's a wonder.
Remember those freaky snowstorms and rain showers in February? Well. this week's blast of 90-degree weather has conspired with that wet February to release a stunning array of wildflowers along the Red Rock loop.

This morning I cycled the 12+plus mile strip of pavement in the foothills of the Spring Mountains and was intoxicated with the aroma of blossoming cliffside rose and Apache plume flowers that are here for a week-long stay in late April until the hot weather puts an end to their glorious blossoms.

The colors of the wildflowers were glorious. It's amazing how these spiky plants can give rise to such stunning colorful beauty in the high desert just outside the sprawling west Vegas suburb of Summerlin.
Near Ice Box Canyon around Mile 6, there's a wall of cliffrose bushes that's providing an amazing floral aroma. It's down hill there, but I tap the brakes to slow down and smell nature.
No wonder Red Rock Canyon is facing so much more traffic along State Road 159. The word is out about beautiful that corridor is.
Pavilion Center DriveI've turned into that grumpy old man in the neighborhood, yelling at speeding motorists endangering lives, drivers who turn in front of me while I stroll through a crosswalk and people who think racing to a red light to just sit and wait is more important than the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians.

So Sunday when I was on my morning saunter along South Pavilion Center Drive in Summerlin, I thanked a Las Vegas Metro officer for pulling over a driver in front of the new Howard Hughes Corporation baseball park being built along the road and a roundabout. The ballyard opens in early April.

I wrote a recent story about pedestrian and bicyclist safety at the new $150 million minor league ballpark because I witnessed motorists who were speeding, inattentive and impatient along South Pavilion Center -- driving behavior that in my humble opinion will imperil the lives of people crossing the street to reach the ballpark and using the Pavilion Center Drive corridor.

You'll have to excuse if I am just a little agitated over motorist driving behavior. When an inattentive motorist slams his car into you from behind while you're bicycling and you survive thanks to the grace of God, you tend to get a little ticked off when you see people driving motorized vehicles in manners that could kill or maim someone. And yes, I have written a book about this.

Howard Hughes Corporation, which owns the ballpark and the newly re-branded Las Vegas Aviators Triple A team, said it will install pedestrian flashers so walkers can cross South Pavilion Center Drive. That's fine. But educating motorists to slow down and not speed through the roundabouts along South Pavilion Center Drive at the new ballpark would help too.

And then there's Metro traffic police on motorcycles who can stop motorists, too, to conduct their own form of behavior modification
After the distracted motorist slammed his car into me in Florida, I returned to Las Vegas in June 2017 to launch LVSportsBiz.com. But I kept my Bicycle Stories blog alive because in a previous life I quit journalism and was a full-time community bicycle rights and safety activist in the Tampa Bay market. I see Las Vegas could use a little help, too, to protect pedestrians and bicyclists from deadly motorists, so I'll be lending my voice to this issue.

Late Sunday afternoon, I walked onto the Channel 3 set to chat with sports anchor Bryan Salmond and I couldn't believe the giant photos in the slide show that were as big as the room's back wall.

I gasped to myself when I saw my battered face that occupied a major section of the set's wall as part of the slide show.

I've come a long way since March 7, 2017 when a distracted motorist slammed into me, nearly killing me near Fort Pierce on Florida's east coast about 2 1/2 hours north of Miami. The size of photo caught me off guard.

It was a great experience to chat with Bryan at Channel 3. Please click here to see the segment, Thank you Bryan for allowing me to tell my story.
It's been three weeks since the finished book I wrote on my comeback, return to Las Vegas and launch of LVSportsBiz.com arrived at my Las Vegas home and promoting and selling, Long Road Back to Las Vegas: How Las Vegas and the Golden Knights healed a journalist's wounds.

In just the past few weeks, I enjoyed selling the book to friends in Tampa and Vero Beach, Fla. at book signings, reading a touching Facebook post by Vegas Golden Knights press box announcer Doug Marsh here in the Las Vegas area and a soaking up a touching review of the book by talented North Carolina writer Willie Drye.

Here's Doug Marsh's post:

In addition, there was a fun time had by all talking LVSportsBiz.com and the book with Las Vegas sport radio personalities Brian Shapiro and Jason Dick -- We had a great time talking on their 6-8PM radio show on 720AM in Las Vegas.
It's been great talking one-on-one with people at book signings. The next book signing is set for Saturday Dec. 22 at the Giant Las Vegas bike shop in Summerlin at 2283 Rampart Blvd. Here's a flier for the book signing, which will follow the Giant Las Vegas Santa Hat Bike Ride.
There was a subdued vibe to the entire week, a quiet acknowledgement for the fate of the national bicycle trade show heading to Reno in 2018.

But Bicycle Stories enjoyed re-connecting with old bikey friends and seeing products. Las year Bicycle Stories inaugurated its Top 5 list of products that caught my eye and here is that list.

1. Athlos Sports custom bike gear. Dave Manchester took my friend Malanda Schmitz's artwork of my dog Pugsy and made it into a wonderful LVSportsBiz.com bike jersey. Check out Athos at its website.

2. After a car crashed into me from behind in March, I have made it a priority to use a mirror when bicycling. I first used a mirror that I mounted on my sunglasses. Now I use a much bigger mirror that offers me a good look at what is behind me thank to a sample mirror given to me by Brett Flemming of Efficient Velo Tools of Portland, OR. I mounted Brett's mirror on my bike helmet with only two ties and it's part of my daily bike ride. Check Efficient Velo at its website here. There's Brett.

And there's the mirror attached to the helmet.

3. There are some good bike socks out there. My favorite socks come from Darn Tough of Vermont. Check out their socks at their website here. They make socks for all sports.

4. I snacked on protein bars made by RxBar. They're from Chicago and it's probably the healthiest food in that city. I met the RxBar reps at last Monday's Outdoor Demo and saw them again at the trade show. Check out the RxBars at their website here.

5. My final product of Las Vegas is the Scooterboard, an electric three-wheeled skateboard with a single-handed handle that looks like it would be a nice device to get around densely-populated areas to get to class, home, work or the store. It's a 22-pounder with top speed of 15.5 mph and has a range of 7.5 miles on a single charge. The charge takes about 2.5 hours. Its owner is Rose Wang, a go-getter with a can-do attitude. She impressed me with her tenacity and kickstarter skills. The kickstarter is live through Sept. 28. Good luck Rose. Check her product out at its website.

See you in Reno.

Good-bye Interbike Las Vegas. Last scene as I left Friday at 2 p.m.

Dave is a super customer-friendly guy who is great at working with customers to tailor make any bike jersey, cap or sports clothing you want.

Dave shepherded this cool LVSportsBiz.com Pugsy bicycle jersey through at Athlos and it's been the hit of the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas.
I was so charged by seeing the LVSportsBiz.com Pugsy bike jersey Wednesday that I donned it for a morning ride today through Red Rock Canyon.

If you're at Interbike, swing by the Athlos exhibitor booth and Dave will be there to field your questions. He's a great guy and easy to work with.

Thank you Dave and Athlos.
I was so stoked to see Malanda Schmitz's artwork on a bicycle jersey that I donned the jersey for a bike ride through Red Rock Canyon this morning.

That's the work of my talented friend and artist, Malanda, who lives with her hockey-savvy husband Karl in Safety Harbor, Fla. and who has a downtown St. Petersburg art studio.

When I say Malanda is gifted, I literally mean it because this generous woman gave me a gift I will treasure forever -- a beautiful and expressive portrait of Pugsy.

Don't take my word about Malanda's immense artistic talent and giving spirit -- look for yourself. Check her beautiful artwork on her website.

I strongly recommend Malanda for your dog portraits or any wildlife and outdoors paintings. See her beautiful work on Facebook: Malanda Art of Life

And thank you Dave Manchester of Athlos Sports for putting together Malanda's great artwork into a bike jersey I will cherish forever. More on Dave and Athlos in a different post.
