Then the brisket will be served at the 6 PM at the potluck with bicycle theme-movies set for 7 PM. Also at 1203 East Powhatan Avenue.

Hangin' With Ranger Rick At Flatwoods

As you know, Hillsborough County government on Nov. 1 instituted a fee to use its regional parks -- $2 per car visit; $50 for an individual annual pass and $100 for a family annual pass.

Bicycle Stories caught up with the famed Ranger Rick at Flatwoods County Park -- home of the nicest bicycling in the county -- to break it all down.

Let's Be Vigilant About Bicycle Safety

Tim Butts, president of the St. Petersburg Bicycle Club, sent out an email regarding a recent rash of bike crashes. It was a call for safety -- and taking a vigilant attitude about being safe out there is welcomed. Here is Tim's message:

There have been many accidents over the last two weeks, both in the SPBC rides and outside the club rides.

1) On Saturday, October 24, a motorist side-swiped a single rider in front of the Vinoy Golf Course Club House;

2) That same morning, two riders in the 22 S ride were seriously injured while the group was turning into Coquina Key;

3) On Thursday, October 29, as the USF ride was returning from Ft. Desoto, a motorist “left hooked” them at the entrance to Eckerd College, injuring two cyclists;

4) On Saturday, October 31, on the straight portion of 4th Street south of 45th Avenue a single rider went down in the 24 S ride after a disruption in the flow of the group; and

5) That same morning, a very experienced cyclist went down in the USF ride at Ft. Desoto after touching wheels with another cyclist.

These accidents where all different from each other. They involved group rides, single riders, automobiles, and experienced riders. It is not clear to me that inexperienced or careless riders were involved, although they may have been, or that the size of the group played a critical role.

Accidents happen; even the pros have accidents frequently. That being said we cannot just throw-up our hands (figuratively) and carry our health insurance cards. We – everyone who rides a bicycle with the Club – need to be as safe as possible.

Safety begins with Information, knowing and following group riding guidelines and obeying traffic laws. Second, be alert and pay attention at all times, and ride in a predictable manner. I have attached Group Riding Guidelines and a review of Florida Bicycling laws. Please review these. If you have been riding since birth or just started last week I want you to read and understand those documents before next Saturday’s Club ride.

The SPBC will continue to explore ways to make the rides as safe as possible, but, honestly, our attempts so far I have not been fully supported by the membership. Although there was much discussion and verbal support about the “Ride Captain” program, the number of people who volunteered to actually wear a green armband was vanishingly small. Similarly, the ride announcer’s efforts to reduce the group sizes have met with similar success.

Safety is up to all of us, but especially you.

Bicycle Trailers Thrive in Tampa

Tampa must be the bicycle trailer capital of the country. Just about every day I'm cycling around town I see someone hauling gear -- a landmower in this case -- in a trailer. I saw this guy on Tuesday.

I saw this guy just this morning in Seminole Heights.

Belt-driven Bicycle Stolen From Carrollwood Bicycle Emporium

In the scumbag bicycle thief category, someone had the gall to steal a belt-driven Trek District bike from SWFBUD member store Carrollwood Bicycle Emporium yesterday.

CBE owner Brian Eckman tells me that the thief apparently just grabbed it and took off while there were several other people coming in and out.

Brian says, "Funny thing is, it's THE MOST rare and recognizable bike they could possibly take, and VERY EASY to spot someone riding it. The bright orange and silver, belt-driven Trek District. There are MAYBE 4-5 sold in the state so far. I've attached a picture. It was a 56cm. I can confirm the serial number if it's recovered."

So, be on the lookout for the bicycle pictured below and contact Brian at 813-963-5765 if you see this bike:

Cycling Lake O Video

Lake Okeechobee by video.

Closing The Circle Around Lake Okeechobee

Another year, another November one-day bike ride around Lake Okeechobee. Nice tailwinds from Okeechobee to Moore Haven, then headwinds and rain in South Bay but a clearing of the sky on the Big Lake's east side made for a terrific completing of the Lake O circle.

Want to buy downtown Moore Haven? There it is.

The architectural highlight of Glades County and Moore Haven.

Sweetness! My own bike lane on US 27 between Moore Haven and Clewiston.

If I had to do a movie about Lake Okeechobee, I'd use Pahokee as my setting.

Like I said, only in Pahokee. Drive-thru thrift store? Are you kidding me.

Another happy customer.

The theater in Pahokee could use some help.

The fertile soil around Lake O is everywhere.

It's a great part of the ride -- US 441 on the east side of Lake O. This is in Port Mayaca.

I just love what residents do in Canal Point with their front lawns.

Can't do the Lake O Ride without taking the Sand Cut sign photo.

Those 7 folks who live in Sand Cut have a sense of humor.

The Big Lake -- this is a view at Port Mayaca, a small smattering of 12 houses or so in west Martin County.

That's life in the country -- just blast your horn if you want to buy a rose bush in Port Mayaca.

Not every home around Okeechobee is a trailer. These snazzy numbers are along a canal that's along the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail that lines the Big Lake.

On State Road 70 driving home to Tampa.
