Thank You Bicycle Bash Participants and Attendees
The 2011 Bicycle Bash Festival on Nov. 6 at Flatwoods Park was a tremendous success. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn led a bike ride that drew more than 125 cyclists, People for Bikes collected hundreds of pro-bike signatures and the Bash generated much media coverage.

SWFBUD worked with Hillsborough County government's TV station to create a bicycle safety video. It includes an important message from the daughters of Diane Vega, a bicyclist killed by a red-light-running motorist Oct. 1 in Tampa. Click on photo for PSA video.

Bicycle Safety Action Plan

Bicycle Safety Action Plan
SWFBUD prompted the Hillsborough County Commission and Tampa City Council to initiate a bicycle safety action plan in response to the many bicyclists deaths in the metro Tampa area. The MPO has prepared a bike plan proposal and there are workshops on Feb. 24, March 1 and March 2. Click on photo to see action plan proposed strategies.

Laws For Bicycle Drivers

Laws For Bicycle Drivers
A cyclist not traveling as fast as the normal speed of traffic must ride as close as practicable to the right hand curb or edge of the road, EXCEPT in the following situations: 1. When passing another vehicle. 2. When making a left turn. 3. When reasonably necessary to avoid conditions such as a moving object, a parked or moving vehicle, pedestrian, animal or surface hazard. 4. When a lane is too narrow for a bicycle and another vehicle to travel safely side by side (a cyclist should maintain at least two feet of clearance from a curb or pavement edge and the minimum clearance for passing a bicylclist is three feet; a lane with less than 14 feet of usable width is usually too narrow for motor traffic to pass.)
