May 15 Is Bike To Work Day!

Well, it's May and across the rest of the country outside Florida the weather is now turning nice. And in the spirit of theme months and theme weeks and theme days May 15 is National Bike to Work Day.

Here in Florida our nice weather is March and we had Bike Month then. But we also have a Bike to Work Day on May 15, too, to try and galvanize people behind the bike-commuting movement. Karen Kress, the bicycle point-woman at the Tampa Downtown Partnership, tells me:

"Downtown Tampa will be celebrating National Bike to Work Day on May 15 with group rides coming in from literally all directions. Participants will meet up afterwards at Indigo Coffee for a free beverage.

"The Downtown YMCA is offering free showers and the Partnership can supply a bike helmet if requested in advance."

Contact Karen for more information at 813-221-3686.

Also on the bike-commuting front, my friend Bruce McCarthey at The Hawley Company, a bicycle parts and accessories distributor for many of the area bike stores including SWFBUD stores, tells me the company owner, Steve Hawley, committed to bicycle commute 50 times in honor of his 50th birthday.

Well, the company is celebrating that 50th ride Tuesday in conjunction with Bike to Work Week. Many of the local employees will be joining him for the ride into the office and most of our outside sales staff will be riding to their daily sales appointments.

Bruce says, "I will be seeing several of my stores along the Pinellas trail tomorrow. We are very excited about this."

Folks, try and ride a bike to work. If you need help on routes and how to bike to work, feel free to contact me, too.
