This just in from Ellen on the Police Unity Tour:
North Mrytle Beach, SC to Wilmington, NC
92 miles. This was a very emotional day. We had a service in Wilimington, NC for Officer Rich Matthews. Rich was a friend and rode with us in 2008. I was honored to lay the wreath at the service in his honor.
Well, my pal Ellen is cycling up the Atlantic seaboard from Jacksonville to Washington D.C. for the Policy Unity Tour. Here's her update as she makes her way through South Carolina ancd into North Carolina on Wednesday:
May 4: 75 miles from Georgetown, SC to North Mrytle Beach, SC. 15.6 mph average, 3000 calories
Today we got to sleep in and did not start riding until 0730. We were able to do this because the route was only 75 miles. The first 20 miles a young man named James Guerry rode with us. James lost his father Deputy Chief Guerry Georgetown PD in the line of duty. We rode to a local cemetary and met Mrs. Mary Scarborough. Her father was Henry Scarborough, Mrytle Beach PD, who was killed in the line in 1945, his very first day on the department.
From there we proceeded to the Myrtle Beach Police Department for a service honoring Officer Joseph Garrity.
The weather finally caught up to us and it poured. We rode about 15 miles to the Horry County Courthouse for a ceremony. We were treated to lunch by the local authorities. From there another 25 miles to North Myrtle Beach for the night.
May 5: All safe. I will start another email. Had to buy a new camera. Too much rain.
