Another Disappearing Bike Lane -- State Road 54

So, I squeeze in a quick 102 miles on this gorgeous day, and I'm biking home along State Road 54 in south Pasco County to Seminole Heights after the pleasant smells of orange blossoms in the hills and valleys of San Ann.

It's here on State Road 54 that I'm thinking, "Where the hell did the bike lane go?" Take a look at the photo -- the state painted over the line that created the bike lane and actually, it appeared to me, created more space on the far left side of the roadway.

Just great...anyone know how much of the road has lost the lane...all of it,maybe? Hope not!

The lost lane is from just west of I-75 to US 41 to accommodate widening SR 54 to 6 lanes. The traffic is "shifted" to the outside to make room for barrier wall on the inside for the widening. This approach does not comply with FDOT Design Standard Index 600 sheet 2 of 12 as it does not maintain bicycle accommodation through the work zone where it previously existed.

The loss of the shoulder is temporary. The shoulder will return upon completion of the current construction. There will also be bicycle slots between the right turn lanes and the through lanes. Look for completion of the project by December 2008. The roadway is being widened, by a developer, to six lanes from US 41 to I-75 in advance of the new Cypress Creek Mall.
