On Thursday's City Council Agenda

RESOLUTION NO. 2010

A RESOLUTION DECLARING SUPPORT FOR THE CREATION OF A
BICYCLE SAFETY ACTION PLAN FOR USE WITHIN THE CITY OF
TAMPA, FLORIDA.

WHEREAS, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor
Vehicles, bicyclists were involved in 4,774 crashes in 2009, and 99 bicyclists were killed; and

WHEREAS, recently, six bicyclists have been killed on Tampa Bay area roads since
the end of July, 2010; and

WHEREAS, action is needed to create a more bicycle friendly community that
encourages its residents to bike for transportation, recreation and physical activity; and

WHEREAS, by promoting bicycle safety, the health of Tampa residents will be
enhanced by reducing injuries, improving fitness, and by decreased roadway congestion
resulting in improved air quality; and

WHEREAS, a safe bicycling environment will offer residents greater mobility,
including more accessibility to public transportation, affording opportunities to more fully participate socially and economically in the community; and

WHEREAS, fostering a safe bicycling environment supports economic development by
creating an attractive destination for new residents, tourists and businesses.

NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF TAMPA, FLORIDA:

Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Tampa hereby declares support for
the creation of a bicycle safety action plan for use within the City of Tampa.

Section 2. That this resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
